Dr. Angela Hunt taught a short class at the Blue Ridge Conference on organization. I already talked about how she organizes her cleaning, and that has changed my life! She also talked about how to manage her time while she is writing.
- Don’t answer the telephone when writing, use email if possible.
- Learn to say “No”. (Always ask “Will this help me to achieve one of the principal goals God has for me?”)
- She works through her books like this:
1st draft goal: Get it DOWN. DO NOT STOP TO EDIT.
2nd draft goal: Fill in gaps. Deeper characterization
3rd draft goal: Add mood music. Write things that set the scene
4th draft goal: Listen draft. Print out hard copy, 20 pages each day. Use Microsoft reader and LISTEN to one set of pages at a time. Follow along with hard copy. Your ear will pick up on things your eye will overlook.
Set a relaxed pace. Allow extra days for illnesses, problems, etc.
- Tame the television
- Put a book (or Kindle) in your car so you always have something to read.
- Streamline and eliminate time wasting activities
- Sabbath: put an X on the calendar at least one day a week
- Your life is your time
Time=Life ; Finite amount allotted
To waste your time = To waste your life
Spending time pondering/praying however, is GOOD
Plan your writing Day / Week / Year
When writing, the key is FOCUS
Thanks to Angie for this practical advice.
PS – I’ll also add – tame the social networking and surfing! Do you have any advice or did this help you? Leave a comment!
I heard it from Angie once and I’m happy to hear it again – great advice. I’m going straight to my writing computer right now! 🙂
